Beneficial And Healthy Antioxidants Found In The Acai Berry

By Annie S Russell

The acai berry is found only in the rainforests of Brazil, yet it is quickly becoming notorious as one of the most nourishing foods in the world. It has only been in modern times that this berry has become available for universal use because it is so extraordinarily delicate and it is only available now because of highly developed processing methods.

This little berry contains a variety of antioxidants. While all of the vital nutrients found in this berry are imperative, two of these critical antioxidants have been demonstrated in diverse studies to have a gigantic advantage on our physical condition. These antioxidants are crucial to the avoidance of disease and troubles normally linked with aging.

Quercitin is copious in the acai berry. This is a plant-derived flavonoid that is believed to be partially responsible for the decrease of cancer, Alzheimer's and other diseases. While the studies so far point out that it may be useful there is no unswerving clinical substantiation on the nutrient or the supplements of it specifically. It is believed to be a contributing cause because it has been found that diets high in fruits and vegetables that are high in this nutrient give to the considerable decline of illness.

In certain studies quercetin has demonstrated major anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the production and release of histamine and other allergic mediators. It also has potent antioxidant activity as measured by the Oxygen Radical Absorbency Capacity or ORAC scale.

The acai berry is very high in quercetin. Other sources of this vital nutrient include red onions, tea, apples and red wine.

The acai berry is also elevated in another critical flavonoid called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are the deep purple pigment found in such foods as eggplant, purple cabbage, blueberries and of course, the acai berry. Anthocyanins are potentially useful for the impediment of cancer, aging and neurological diseases, inflammation, diabetes and bacterial infections as indicated in preliminary laboratory studies.

A important study indicated that it might be possible that anthocyanins could be favorable for weight loss. In the controlled study, laboratory mice were given purified anthocyanins, and two other groups were given a placebo and the actual fruit, in that order. The main group that received the purified anthocyanins was able to lower their body fat and continue it significantly more than the other two groups.

The acai berry is plentiful in these two important flavonoids and other imperative antioxidants and nutrients also. This little berry contains more than 30 times the amount of anthocyanins that is present in red wine. This little berry from the rainforest of Brazil is quickly becoming known as one of most healthful foods ever found in the world. - 26230
